Social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, has officially discontinued its old Twitter app for Mac. Users attempting to access the legacy app are now prompted to “upgrade” to the X Mac for iPad version, but this transition has been far from smooth.
The End of the Old Twitter Mac App
While Twitter.com now permanently redirects to X.com, the old Twitter Mac app was still available on the Mac App Store until recently. Elon Musk’s X developers have finally pulled the plug on this legacy app, pushing users towards the newer X Mac for iPad app instead.
Why This “Upgrade” Feels Like a Downgrade
The so-called upgrade includes modern X features such as AI enhancements and Premium options. However, it also means losing the ad-free, promotion-free experience that made the old Twitter app a favorite among long-time users. The legacy app was a refuge from the myriad ads, promotions, and community notes that now clutter X.
Compatibility Issues with Older Macs
The new X Mac for iPad app is compatible only with Apple laptops equipped with Apple Silicon chips, namely M1 chips or higher. This leaves users of older Intel-based Macs without access to a dedicated app, forcing them to rely on the website. To reduce the number of ads on the website, users will need to subscribe to Twitter Premium.
Account Suspension Issues
To add to the frustrations, users on Reddit have reported that switching to the new X app and logging in has resulted in their accounts being suspended. X software engineer Zach Warunek acknowledged the issue, stating that the team is investigating the problem.
Considering Alternatives
For diehard Twitter fans unwilling to transition to X, it may be time to explore alternatives such as Mastodon or Threads. If you decide to make the switch, don’t forget to delete your X account on your way out.
